Additionally, people who replaced their mattresses and bedding to improve sleep quality were analyzed to have higher sleep satisfaction.
According to the results of the "Survey on the Correlation between Lifestyle Patterns and Sleep Satisfaction by Occupation of Koreans and Measures to Improve Sleep Quality" announced on the 20th by Australian home furniture company Koala, only 44% of all respondents answered that they were "satisfied with their sleep."
The survey was conducted on 1,400 men and women nationwide from nine occupational groups including office workers, field workers, freelancers, and students. Among them, the student group showed the highest sleep satisfaction, with only 50% of respondents satisfied with their sleep. Night shift workers and self-employed individuals also showed low satisfaction rates at 45% and 44%, respectively, indicating low sleep satisfaction across all occupational groups.
Sleep satisfaction was found to vary significantly depending on lifestyle patterns. Among 824 respondents who usually go to bed at regular times, 59% reported satisfactory sleep, whereas among 576 respondents who did not, 78% were dissatisfied with their sleep. This trend was similar in sleep satisfaction by occupation (multiple responses allowed). Among 67% of shift workers who go to bed at irregular times, 64% answered that they were not satisfied with their sleep, and in fact, 64% of shift workers said that "irregular lifestyle habits" were the biggest factor affecting the decline in sleep quality.
87% Use Smartphones Before Bedtime
The most common activities before falling asleep (multiple responses allowed) were smartphone use (87%), watching TV (35%), and computer use (19%). However, respondents who used smartphones, TV, and computers answered that they were dissatisfied with their sleep at rates of 57%, 57%, and 60%, respectively. On the other hand, respondents who went to bed without any particular activity or did stretching answered that they were satisfied with their sleep at rates of 54% and 53%, respectively, suggesting that engaging in light activities such as stretching or going straight to sleep before bedtime is more helpful for sleep quality than using electronic devices.
Among 782 respondents who reported low sleep satisfaction, 61% pointed to "difficulty falling asleep or frequent/early awakening insomnia" as the biggest sleep disturbance factor. 43% of all respondents said they had tried to improve their sleep disorders. Among these attempts (multiple responses allowed), increasing daytime activity was the most common at 53%, followed by "replacing mattress and bedding (45%)" and "changing the bedroom environment to reduce tension (30%)."
"Replacing Mattress and Bedding Shows the Greatest Improvement"
Among the measures to improve sleep quality, the highest satisfaction was shown for "replacing mattress and bedding (39%)." Among 269 respondents who tried replacing mattress and bedding, 81% most considered pillows that provide good support for the neck and head, 58% considered the material and texture of the covering bedding such as blankets, and 45% considered the support and comfort of the mattress (multiple responses allowed). Satisfaction after replacement was highest for mattresses (49%), followed by covering bedding (42%) and pillows (41%), indicating that replacing the mattress, which has the greatest impact on physical comfort during sleep, showed the greatest improvement rate.
