Notification of Key Information via Text Message When Subscribing or Changing Paid Broadcasting Services
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The Korea Communications Commission held the first meeting of the 'Paid Broadcasting Voluntary Improvement Working Group' and recommended paid broadcasting operators to notify users of key information via text messages when subscribing, changing, or renewing contracts to prevent recurring user complaints.
The Paid Broadcasting Voluntary Improvement Working Group is a public-private voluntary council operated quarterly since 2019 by the KCC and the Korea Communications Agency, together with 18 paid broadcasting operators and related associations, to address issues in the broadcasting market.
Through analysis of complaints received by paid broadcasting operators, the working group identified that users often fail to recognize or are not properly informed of key details such as company name, subscription date, subscribed product, contract period, and total fees when subscribing, changing, or renewing contracts. To resolve these issues, some operators within the group proposed sending notification texts containing subscription, change, and renewal information.

Accordingly, on the 17th, the KCC requested cooperation from all paid broadcasting operators during the working group meeting to send notification texts providing subscription, change, and renewal information to resolve recurring complaints and emphasized the need for preventive efforts. All paid broadcasting operators plan to implement text message notifications this year to enhance user convenience.
