Court Dismisses President Moon's Application for Cost Security Against Churches Filing Lawsuits
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Regarding the churches filing a lawsuit against President Moon Jae-in in opposition to quarantine guidelines, President Moon's side, confident of winning, requested the court to order the churches to provide a security deposit for litigation costs, but the court dismissed the request.
According to the legal community on the 16th, the Seoul Central District Court Civil Division 15 (Chief Judge Choi Gyu-yeon) dismissed President Moon's application for a security deposit for litigation costs against four churches in the metropolitan area.
According to the Civil Procedure Act, the losing party must bear the litigation costs, and the court may order the plaintiff to provide a security deposit for litigation costs.
Earlier, the churches claimed that President Moon defamed them by mentioning in August 2020 that certain churches were refusing quarantine guidelines, and that they suffered damages due to the quarantine guidelines issued by President Moon, including non-face-to-face worship, filing a damages lawsuit claiming 10 million won per church.
President Moon's side applied for the security deposit last October, stating that "the claim is clearly without merit."
