Suncheon City Council Special Committee on Rural and Fisheries Development Concludes Activities
Activity Ended Through Adoption of Report on Results of the 258th Extraordinary Session
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Special Committee on Rural Development of the Suncheon City Council (Chairman Heo Yu-in) held a meeting the day before to wrap up the committee's activities and reviewed the progress made so far, the committee announced on the 15th.
The special committee was formed on February 1 of last year to establish mid- to long-term policies and action plans to overcome difficulties in rural areas, such as population decline in rural areas and widening income gaps between urban and rural regions.
Over the past one year and five months, the committee requested relevant departments to take measures to prevent recurrence of damage caused by abnormal weather, such as expanding drainage facilities to prepare for frequent heavy rains by sharing damage situations under heavy rain warnings, and requesting pesticide support to prevent pests and diseases. The committee also visited the AI base disinfection post in Dosadong and the DSC at Suncheon Nonghyup Hwangjeon branch to check on livestock disease crisis management issues and the preparation status of the comprehensive food development plan, striving to seek sustainable rural development measures.
Chairwoman Jang Sook-hee said, “We promoted special committee activities to prepare rural development measures, including public opinion listening through rural site visits and discussions on responses to abnormal weather.” She emphasized, “Although the special committee activities are concluding, we must continue efforts to implement policies for revitalizing the rural economy, such as fostering convergence industries in rural areas to attract population inflow in preparation for population extinction due to ultra-aging in rural areas, and establishing new distribution systems for agricultural and fishery products.”
