Shane Lowry (Ireland) made a thrilling hole-in-one on the 17th hole (par 3) during the remaining third round of the PGA Tour’s "The Players Championship" (total prize money $20 million) held on the 14th (Korean time) at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA (par 72, 7,256 yards). He used a pitching wedge from 123 yards, and the ball flew straight, reached the right side of the hole, and spun into the cup.
The 17th hole is the biggest challenge, swallowing more than 50 balls every year. It is even notorious as the "Death Hole." This year as well, Honda Classic champion Jeb Straka (Austria) recorded a quadruple bogey with "5 on 2 putts" after his tee shot and drop zone shot both landed in the water during the second round. Brooks Koepka had a tough time with a double bogey in the first round and a triple bogey in the second round, and Scott Piercy (both USA) suffered another quadruple bogey on this day.

Lowry raised both arms in celebration immediately after the hole-in-one and was congratulated by playing partners including Ian Poulter (England). It was the 10th hole-in-one overall and the first in three years since Ryan Moore’s first round in 2019. He also delighted fans by gifting the hole-in-one ball to the gallery as a "fan service." With a 4-under-par round including the hole-in-one on the 14th hole, four birdies, and two bogeys, he quickly moved up to a tie for 11th place (5-under-par). He is four strokes behind the leader Anirban Lahiri (India), with a strong chance to contend for the championship on the final day.
