'The Power of the Dog' Jane Campion Takes a Big Step Toward Oscar Best Director Award
DGA Award Winner "Truly Moving"
Jane Campion, the director of the film 'The Power of the Dog,' has taken a significant step toward winning the Academy Award for Best Director. On the 12th (local time), the Directors Guild of America announced Campion as the winner of the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film at the 74th annual ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles (LA). This award is often seen as a strong predictor of the Academy Award for Best Director. In the past 70 years, only seven directors have failed to win both trophies. The most recent case was Sam Mendes, who won this award in 2019 for '1917.' That year, the Oscar for Best Director went to Bong Joon-ho for 'Parasite.'
Campion became the third woman to receive the Directors Guild of America Award, following Kathryn Bigelow for 'The Hurt Locker' in 2010 and Chlo? Zhao for 'Nomadland' last year. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am truly moved by the filmmakers who voted for me." Referring to last year's winner Zhao, she added, "I believe that by making history first and bringing about significant change, I am able to stand here today. I will also continue to pay attention to women raising their voices."

'The Power of the Dog' is a psychological thriller set on a ranch in Montana in the early 20th century American West. It inherits the themes of the revisionist Western (a new trend in Western films that reconsiders the conventions of traditional Westerns) and concretizes the inner lives of various characters through events. It depicts the clash between past and future with brutal violence, creating a whirlwind of passion that earned Campion the Best Director award at last year's Venice Film Festival. The film received the most nominations (12) at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and major acting categories. Campion previously won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for 'The Piano' in 1993. The ceremony will be held on the 27th at the Dolby Theatre in LA.
