Yoon Administration's Shipping and Shipbuilding Expectations 'Rising'... "Need for Concrete Plans"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] With Yoon Seok-yeol of the People Power Party becoming the 20th president, expectations are rising for the promotion of the shipping and shipbuilding industries. This is because President-elect Yoon announced during his candidacy that he would foster the shipping and shipbuilding industries to achieve a new leap forward as a maritime powerhouse. However, since his pledges so far have been broad in scope, it is expected that a process of concretization will be necessary.
According to related industries on the 13th, President-elect Yoon pledged during his candidacy to achieve a new leap forward as a maritime powerhouse based on the growth of the shipping and shipbuilding industries.
President-elect Yoon proposed the activation of the Excellent Shipper Certification System and strengthening incentives for certified companies. The Shipper Certification System was introduced in 2020 to induce continuous win-win cooperation between shipping companies and shipper enterprises and to enhance competitiveness in maritime exports and imports.
Companies certified as excellent shippers can receive benefits such as tax credits, preferential interest rates from the Export-Import Bank, and additional points in government projects.
Along with this, he also pledged to expand the production and orders of low-carbon emission, high value-added eco-friendly ships and to support research and development. As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strengthens environmental regulations for international voyage vessels, the transition to eco-friendly ships is accelerating, so support will be provided for the production, order expansion, and R&D of low-carbon emission, high value-added eco-friendly ships.
President-elect Yoon also emphasized the need to create new business models in line with paradigm shifts in the shipping and port sectors, such as the introduction of autonomous ships and the development and operation of smart ports.
