Kim Yu-yeol, EBS President, "Responding to Media Changes with 3-First Management"
Emphasizing Innovative Content Creation and Military-Civilian Integration Strategy
"Aspiring to Realize EBS's Dream of Positive Influence"
Kim Yu-yeol, the new president of EBS, announced that he will respond to the rapidly changing broadcasting and media landscape with management based on foresight, insight, and proactive action. At the inauguration ceremony held on the 10th at the EBS headquarters in Ilsan, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, President Kim stated, "With the onslaught of overseas media such as Netflix and YouTube, not only EBS but the entire domestic broadcasting industry stands at a crossroads between life and death," and presented various countermeasures.
The core strategy is content production that breaks away from past conventions and the "gunhak-ilgye" (群鶴一鷄) strategy. He said, "Netflix invests 20 trillion won out of its 23 trillion won revenue in content production," adding, "No domestic media can ever win in competition using the same method." He emphasized, "In the era of ultra-multimedia and channels, even one chicken among hundreds of thousands of cranes can stand out," and "If we discover, think, and act differently from existing or other media, we can create unique value for EBS."
As another response strategy, President Kim mentioned entering the global content production market and attracting overseas capital. As a suitable example, he pointed to 'Great Minds,' which started on the 22nd of last month. It is a lecture site where one can listen to the profound knowledge of world-renowned scholars. It can be viewed with subtitles not only in Korean but also in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. He said, "Through creative methods and dedicated efforts, we invited fifty world-class scholars and amazed the world," and "We showed that if you do not give up and keep challenging, you can achieve your dreams someday."
President Kim also stressed the need to address academic and educational gaps caused by the spread of COVID-19. Referring to the already established remote education systems such as 'Online Class' and 'Video Lecture System,' he emphasized, "EBS's role has become even more important in the post-COVID era." He then expressed his ambition, saying, "I will take the lead more than anyone else to realize EBS's dream of having a positive influence on the world."
