Volvo Conducts Wireless Charging Technology Test for Electric Car 'XC40 Recharge' in Sweden
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Volvo Cars announced on the 10th that it will test new wireless charging technology for the pure electric compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) 'XC40 Recharge' in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The wireless charging technology test will be conducted at an electric vehicle charging station set up in the Gothenburg area. The test will run for 12 hours or more per day, covering 100,000 km annually, over a period of three years. To this end, Volvo plans to use the XC40 Recharge model as a taxi in collaboration with Cabonline, the largest taxi company in the Nordic region.
Mats Moberg, Head of Research & Development (R&D) at Volvo Cars, said, "Thanks to the Gothenburg Green City Zone initiative, we have the opportunity to try out exciting new technologies in real life and evaluate the potential for these technologies to be widely adopted in the future. We are pleased to test new charging technology with carefully selected partners and assess alternative charging options for Volvo's future electric vehicles."
The test involves the participation of the U.S. wireless charging technology developer, Momentum Dynamics, which supports the wireless charging stations. When a vehicle is parked at a station equipped with a wireless charging pad, the pad recognizes the vehicle and transmits energy, which the vehicle receives.
At this time, to ensure precise contact between the vehicle and the charging pad, the driver must use the 360-degree camera system function. The amount of chargeable power provided through the wireless charging pad is over 40 kW, and the charging speed is about four times faster than the wired 11 kW AC slow charger. It charges at a speed similar to that of a 50 kW DC fast charger.
