What Do Proteins Do? ... Busan City Hosts the World's Largest Proteomics Academic Event
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The world's largest academic event in the proteomics field will be held at BEXCO in Busan in September 2023.
The Busan Metropolitan City has succeeded in hosting the world's largest academic event in the proteomics field, the '2023 World Proteome Organization Congress' (HUPO 2023), in Busan.
At the 2021 World Proteome Organization Congress held online last year, the host city for 2023 was reviewed.
After discussions on the event period and hosting method, Busan was confirmed as the host city for 'HUPO 2023.'
Until the final confirmation of Busan as the host city, the city maintained a close cooperative system with Busan Tourism Organization, the Korean Proteomics Society, and the HUPO 2023 Organizing Committee to promote the bid.
The World Proteome Organization was established in 2001 to develop new technologies and training to better understand human diseases.
The association is an international scientific organization that defines and promotes the academic field of proteomics, which studies the functions and changes of proteins within cells, and includes over 5,000 scientists from 54 countries.
First held in France in 2002, the congress has since been held annually rotating through the Americas, Asia-Oceania, and Europe-Africa continents. It was held in Seoul, Korea, in 2007, and Busan will be the second host city in Korea.
'HUPO 2023' is scheduled to be held from September 16 to 20, 2023, for five days at the BEXCO Convention Hall in Busan, hosted by the Korean Proteomics Society.
About 1,800 participants from over 40 countries are expected to attend. The event will also include the general assembly, academic presentations, invited lectures, exhibitions, and public participation events.

Park Hyung-jun, Mayor of Busan, said, "'HUPO 2023' will serve as an opportunity to revitalize Busan's biotechnology and new medical industries, which are somewhat disadvantaged compared to the Seoul metropolitan area including Seoul and Gyeonggi Province," adding, "We will strive to create a research foundation in basic medical sciences domestically and internationally and attract related industries through a successful event."
