865 Graduates to Date... After Completion, Engage as Urban Agriculture Instructors and Volunteers at School Gardens and Urban Farmer Schools
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 10th that it is recruiting 30 Seoul citizens who wish to become ‘Urban Agriculture Experts.’ After completing the specialized course, participants can work as instructors at school gardens, urban farmer schools, and more.
The ‘Urban Agriculture Expert Training’ is being recruited through the Agricultural Technology Center website. The training will run from the 30th to April 29th and is offered free of charge. The curriculum consists of agricultural theories and techniques necessary for activities as urban agriculture experts, including understanding and importance of urban agriculture, soil and fertilizers, eco-friendly cultivation techniques for each crop, pest and disease management, vegetable gardening, and indoor horticulture. Participants who attend more than 80% of the course and achieve the required score on the completion exam will be awarded a certificate.
Seoul has established and operated the Urban Agriculture Expert Training course to meet the continuous interest and demand of citizens in urban agriculture, producing 865 graduates over 18 sessions until last year. After completion, graduates work as instructors related to urban agriculture or volunteer at urban agriculture fairs and various exhibitions.
The training is open to any Seoul citizen with agricultural-related experience, such as graduates from agricultural schools, holders of agricultural-related certificates, farmers registered as agricultural business operators with over three years of farming experience, those who have completed more than 50 hours of agricultural education (100 hours for cyber education), or those with work experience at agricultural institutions or organizations located in Seoul.

Thirty participants will be selected through document screening, and the results will be announced on the Agricultural Technology Center website on the 24th. Cho Sang-tae, Director of the Seoul Agricultural Technology Center, said, "This course was established to cultivate urban agriculture leaders who can serve as volunteers and mentors to disseminate urban agriculture technology," adding, "We hope those with agricultural experience interested in urban agriculture will take this course and become active urban agriculture experts."
