Lee, Emphasizing 'Character Theory,' Casts Deciding Votes and Focuses on Underdog Areas... "Proven Professionals' Skills Needed"
Boosting 'Competent Candidates' in Jeju, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Cheongju
Targeting the Capital Area on the Final Day
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the 7th, Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate, appealed for support during the final campaign of the 20th presidential election, saying, "We need the proven skills of a professional." Starting from Jeju, Lee focused on promoting the idea of a capable figure by visiting relatively disadvantaged or swing regions such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Cheongju.
At his first campaign event held at Dongmun Rotary in Jeju, Lee claimed, "We need the proven skills of a professional, not a practice ground for amateur beginners. Who is the candidate ready to lead the government stably together with the Democratic Party's 172 seats?" emphasizing that he is a candidate prepared for stable governance.
He targeted Yoon Seok-youl, the People Power Party presidential candidate, saying, "The people of Jeju know best what tragedies unfold and what wounds of hatred remain on this land when the world is divided by ideology and camps (referring to Jeju 4·3). The fate of a country is determined by its highest leader. You know well what happens to a country when its leader is incompetent, irresponsible, and ignorant."
In the afternoon, Lee plans to visit Busan to reiterate pledges related to the Gadeokdo New Airport, the bid for the 2030 World Expo, the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (Bu-Ul-Gyeong) mega-city, and the southern metropolitan economic capital. Since Busan is the political hometown of former Presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Moon Jae-in, he will mention the 16th presidential election when Roh was elected, urging, "In 2002, we acted with desperate determination. Please choose not based on party colors but for the country's future and your better life. On the 13th anniversary of President Roh's passing, together with President Moon Jae-in, I will greet you as the 20th president," emphasizing the consolidation of his support base.
In Daegu, known as the so-called "heart of conservatism," he plans to send a message of consolation to residents of Daegu and Gyeongbuk affected by wildfires while appealing to the moderate voters for a chance to revive the Daegu-Gyeongbuk economy, his hometown. Moreover, through messages asking to elect a president for the future rather than party colors and to make the first Democratic Party president from Daegu-Gyeongbuk, he aims to attract conservative voters who might defect.
After campaigning in Daegu, Lee plans to emphasize that he is a son-in-law of Chungcheong while campaigning in the major cities of Chungcheong, Daejeon, and Cheongju, once again stressing livelihood, economy, reconciliation, and pragmatism. In particular, he envisions emphasizing political reform and a unified government agreed upon with Kim Dong-yeon, former New Wave candidate from Eumseong, Chungbuk.

On the last day of the campaign, the 8th, Lee intends to tour major metropolitan areas such as Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon, making a final all-out effort to court undecided moderate and young voters. Especially before 9 p.m., when the use of loudspeakers and microphones is prohibited, he will campaign around Gwanghwamun near the Blue House, and until midnight on the 9th, when the campaign ends, he will wage an all-out battle in university areas in Seoul where young people gather.
