COVID-19 Cases Reach 200,405 Nationwide by 9 PM... 31,901 Fewer Than Yesterday
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Amid the rapid spread of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant, more than 200,000 confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 PM.
According to local governments including Seoul on the 6th, from midnight to 9 PM, 204,05 people were confirmed positive for COVID-19 across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. This is 31,901 fewer than the 232,306 cases recorded during the same time frame the previous day.
Compared to the count at the same time one week ago on the 27th of last month (135,361 cases), the number increased by 1.5 times, and compared to two weeks ago on the 20th of last month (93,260 cases), it increased by 2.1 times. Since there is still time until midnight when the count closes, the new cases announced on the 7th are expected to be much higher.
As of 9 PM on this day, new confirmed cases were 104,155 (52.0%) in the metropolitan area and 96,250 (48.0%) in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 50,117, Seoul 39,560, Busan 17,552, Incheon 14,478, Gyeongnam 14,235, Gyeongbuk 7,510, Daegu 7,740, Chungnam 6,750, Gwangju 6,305, Jeonbuk 671, Daejeon 5,760, Jeonnam 5,738, Gangwon 5,392, Chungbuk 4,902, Ulsan 3,922, Jeju 3,210, and Sejong 1,163.

Since the Omicron variant became the dominant strain in Korea, new confirmed cases have rapidly increased. Over the week starting from the 28th of last month, the daily new confirmed cases were 139,624 → 138,990 → 219,228 → 198,800 → 266,850 → 254,327 → 243,628, averaging 208,778 cases per day.
