[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China has once again expressed its intention to pursue peaceful reunification with Taiwan.
On the 5th, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang stated in the work report at the National People's Congress (NPC) held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, "We must adhere to the policy and guidelines regarding Taiwan," adding, "We should uphold the One-China principle and the '1992 Consensus' (an agreement in 1992 recognizing one China while allowing each side to use its own name) to promote peaceful development of cross-strait relations and national reunification." Premier Li appeared to mention peaceful development in light of the Ukraine situation.
In Taiwan, concerns have been widespread that Taiwan could face the same fate as Ukraine following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Premier Li further emphasized, "We firmly oppose separatist activities by Taiwan independence forces and interference by external forces," and stressed, "Compatriots on both sides of the strait must unite their hearts to overcome difficulties together and achieve the glorious cause of national rejuvenation."
Regarding policy toward Hong Kong, he mentioned the "One Country, Two Systems" framework that guarantees Hong Kong's autonomy, while reiterating the existing stance of expanding the Chinese government's influence over Hong Kong by stating, "Patriots govern Hong Kong."
On foreign policy, he declared that China will pursue an independent and autonomous peaceful diplomatic policy. Premier Li stated, "From beginning to end, China has been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order," and emphasized, "We will make greater contributions together with the international community to promote world peace, stability, development, and prosperity."
He added, "China will steadfastly follow the path of peaceful development," and said, "We will promote the building of a new type of international relations and the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind."
