Samsung-LG Electronics Receive US EPA 'SMM Award' (Comprehensive)
Samsung's 'Solar Cell Remote Control' and LG's 'Soundbar' Receive Awards Respectively
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jin-ho] Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics received awards at the '2021 SMM Awards' hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Samsung Electronics announced on the 4th that it received two awards: the 'Sustainability Excellence Award' for improving resource efficiency and recycling activities with its Solar Cell Remote Control, and the 'Gold Tier' for its achievements in collecting waste electronic products.
The SMM Awards were established in 2014 to encourage sustainable resource management activities. The awards are divided into three categories: the Sustainability Excellence Award, which evaluates the resource efficiency of products; the Tier Award, which assesses corporate recycling performance; and the Champion Award, which recognizes outstanding eco-friendly products, programs, and new technologies.
Samsung Electronics' TV Solar Cell Remote Control is an eco-friendly remote that can be charged by solar power or indoor lighting instead of using disposable batteries. Samsung Electronics reduced the power consumption of the Solar Cell Remote Control by approximately 86% compared to conventional remotes and applied recycled plastic containing more than 24% recycled materials to its exterior.
Based on its achievements in collecting and recycling waste electronic products, Samsung Electronics was selected as a Gold Tier company, the highest grade in the Tier Award category, for eight consecutive years. Samsung Electronics collected a total of 40,040 tons of waste electronic products in the U.S. in 2020 through optimized resource management by region, including outsourcing to specialized companies and in-house collection.
Kim Hyung-nam, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics' Global CS Center, stated, "Samsung Electronics strives to minimize environmental impact from product development to disposal and will further strengthen efforts to expand waste product collection and recycling for a circular economy."
LG Electronics also received the Gold Tier in the Tier Award category in recognition of its achievements in waste appliance collection activities.
LG Soundbar was awarded the 'Champion' Award for reducing greenhouse gas emissions during design and manufacturing processes and for using recycled materials in both the product body and packaging.
