[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Chunsu] Mokpo Maritime Police Agency has established a 2022 coastal accident prevention safety management plan and has begun strengthening safety management to prevent accidents along coastal areas such as shorelines, mudflats, and harbors.
According to Mokpo Maritime Police on the 3rd, a total of 55 safety accidents occurred last year in coastal waters within the jurisdiction, including 26 drowning cases, 16 isolation cases, 7 falls, and 6 others.
By location, there were 16 cases at shorelines, 14 at mudflats, 12 at harbors, 4 at beaches, and 3 at rocky shores. Most accidents occurred in areas with many fishing and recreational visitors such as shorelines, mudflats, and harbors, and the majority of safety accidents (40 cases, 72%) were due to carelessness.
Accordingly, Mokpo Maritime Police will expand the operation of coastal safety keepers composed of local residents to prevent coastal accidents and spread marine safety culture, and strengthen proactive safety management through tailored risk forecasting systems.
Furthermore, through tasks such as ▲strengthening patrols in vulnerable waters and implementing a comprehensive safety network ▲holding regional coastal accident prevention councils ▲joint public-private inspections of risk areas and management of safety facilities ▲year-round nationwide life jacket wearing campaigns ▲operating visiting coastal safety classes, they plan to make every effort to prevent coastal safety accidents.
