[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Human Rights Commission announced on the 2nd that the insurance company and the Financial Supervisory Service have accepted the recommendation to improve the practice of refusing accident insurance enrollment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Previously, in September last year, the Human Rights Commission recommended improving the practice of denying accident insurance enrollment based on the decision-making capacity of individuals with intellectual disabilities and instructed to supervise and guide to prevent similar cases from recurring.

According to the Human Rights Commission, the insurance company A, the subject of the case, responded that it accepted the recommendation and decided to underwrite accident insurance for the complainant with an intellectual disability. Additionally, it proposed establishing a system to enhance the convenience of insurance enrollment for people with disabilities. The Financial Supervisory Service also sent official letters requesting strengthened management of accident insurance underwriting operations to insurance companies, the Life Insurance Association, and the General Insurance Association. The Human Rights Commission stated, "We will continue to pay attention to discrimination in insurance enrollment based on disability and strive to improve it."
