[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Busan Museum of Modern Art announced that it will hold the themed exhibition from March 1 to July 10 in the basement first floor exhibition rooms (3, 4, 5) of the museum.

This exhibition was prepared to examine new attempts in regional art by investigating and exhibiting the background and development process of Busan media art around the 2000s within the global art trend where media art actively developed at the end of the 20th century.

From the 1990s to the 2000s, the Busan art scene experienced a dynamic period of change with the opening of the Busan Museum of Art, the hosting of the Busan Biennale, and the emergence of alternative spaces. In particular, trends in contemporary global art using new media such as video and computers were actively introduced, and such movements began to appear locally as well.

Regional artists working with new media mostly actively engaged in group activities. In the early 1990s, starting with the ‘Media Theory Research Group,’ video-specialized groups that blurred the boundaries between film and art such as ‘DigiArt’ and ‘INOUT’ presented various video works using animation techniques. Additionally, ‘Pixel’ and ‘format’ represented characteristics of video and multimedia specialized groups, while ‘Medium’ and ‘C.O.D.E.’ comprehensively showcased various types of works including media installations involving video and photography.

These progressive young regional artists brought significant changes to the art environment, which was centered on traditional genres at the time, by incorporating various media such as early internet, computers, and video into art production.

This exhibition introduces their works from that time and reproduced works, organizing and presenting their activities and working environments. The exhibition features over 30 works by 14 artists who were active in Busan, including Eunguk Park, Dongju Park, Hyunki Lee, Sangho Park, Jungwoo Hong, Sanghwa Kim, Byungchan Heo, Sunghoon Park, Wooyong Jeon, Sangkun Lim, Sungjin Song, Heeyoung Kim, Kwanggi Lee, and Manyoung Jung.

Kim Seong-yeon, director of Busan Museum of Modern Art, said, “This exhibition aligns with the identity of Busan Museum of Modern Art, which has focused on exhibiting new media art,” and added, “Research on the starting period of regional media art developed under harsh conditions is also meaningful for understanding the flow of Busan art history, so we ask for the citizens’ great interest.”
