[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] A man in his 40s who was accused of assaulting a taxi driver and verbally abusing a part-time worker for not allowing him to eat inside a convenience store was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
According to the legal community on the 27th, on the 14th, Judge Choi Seon-jae of the Criminal Division 13 at the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced A (46) to 10 months in prison on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (assaulting a driver, etc.), obstruction of business, and damage to public documents.
On July 23 of last year, around 7:30 p.m., A got into a taxi on the road in front of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and had an argument with taxi driver B because the driver did not take the route A wanted. When B asked A to get off midway and pay the fare, A sprayed iced coffee he was holding onto B’s face, according to the investigation.
It was also revealed that A caused a disturbance at a convenience store. On November 4 of last year, A took off his mask and threw it on the floor at a convenience store located in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, purchased a bottle of soju, and tried to drink it at a table inside the store. When part-time worker C stopped him, A reportedly said, “What does it matter if I bought it with my own money?” and continued drinking soju while cursing.
The police were called and arrived at the convenience store, but A continued drinking soju and verbally abused the officers who advised him to go home. During the investigation after his arrest, when A was asked by the police officers at Yongma Police Substation to sign and seal documents related to his arrest, he shouted, “I pay taxes too,” and tore up the documents, according to the investigation.

The court stated, “It is serious that the defendant, who was charged with assaulting a driver and was about to have his first trial, committed further crimes of obstruction of business and damage to public documents, showing a disregard for the law. However, considering that the victims do not wish for punishment against the defendant and that the defendant has shown remorse and promised not to reoffend, these favorable circumstances were taken into account in determining the sentence.”
