Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho Removes Rocks at Hwaseong Jebuhang Harbor
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province's first sea-cleaning vessel, 'Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho,' has successfully completed the removal of underwater rocks in the Jebuhang shipping lane.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 27th that on the 24th, Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho carried out operations to remove underwater rocks located offshore in Jebuhang, Seosin-myeon, Hwaseong City, and retrieved and disposed of marine debris in the surrounding area.
Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho is equipped with an excavator installed at the bow, designed for various purposes including marine debris disposal.
On that day, the province used the excavator to lift the underwater rocks and collected about 3 tons of marine debris such as discarded tires and fishing nets.
Jebuhang sees about 500 fishing vessels entering and leaving annually, and last year, the nearby Jebu Marina Harbor was opened, increasing the operation of leisure boats.
As a result, the underwater rocks in the shipping lane pose a significant threat to vessels passing nearby, and there have been frequent incidents of fishing boats colliding and getting damaged.
A provincial official stated, "By removing the underwater rocks that posed a major threat to fishing vessel navigation, fishermen can now operate with peace of mind," adding, "Going forward, Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho will be used multi-purposely not only for collecting marine debris but also to ensure the safe navigation of vessels."
The province previously constructed the 154-ton Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho in December 2020. The vessel is equipped with marine debris collection equipment such as an excavator, lifting frame, crane, and workboat, as well as a three-dimensional sonar for underwater debris investigation and unmanned aerial drones.
