[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] For the first time at a domestic port, a road tractor using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel will be introduced at Busan Port.

Busan Port Authority (BPA) is officially starting a pilot project to introduce LNG road tractors to reduce fine dust and create an eco-friendly port.

To facilitate the introduction, BPA signed a business agreement with two transportation companies, Dongryun Logistics and HU Logistics, selected through a public contest in December last year, to implement the "Busan Port Eco-friendly LNG Road Tractor Introduction Project."

The transportation companies mainly transport container cargo operating at Busan New Port and North Port, and BPA will support each company with up to 100 million KRW for the purchase of new LNG road tractor vehicles and transportation support costs.

The LNG road tractor to be introduced is a 460-horsepower large tractor developed by Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle.

Since LNG used as fuel is natural gas transformed into liquid form, it hardly emits fine dust or other air pollutants during vehicle operation, making it effective in improving air quality.

Compared to diesel road tractors using diesel fuel, it has the advantages of lower fuel costs and reduced maintenance costs as it does not require urea solution.

BPA plans to monitor the performance of LNG road tractor operations over the next year and consider expanding the project.

Kang Jun-seok, President of BPA, said, "The LNG road tractor introduction project is very meaningful to realize an eco-friendly Busan Port free of fine dust," adding, "We will discover and promote more diverse measures aiming for a clean Busan Port."
