Gwangyang Steelworks Manager Han Heecheon, Who Saved a Life with CPR, Selected as 'Heart Saver'
Saving a Precious Citizen's Life Through Quick Response in an Emergency
The Importance of First Aid and CPR Learned at Work
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] "In a critical moment of choice, whether to help or to pass by, there may be a moment of hesitation, but please remember me and make a choice without regret."
Han Hee-cheon, Manager of the Quality Technology Department at Gwangyang Steelworks, saved the life of a collapsed patient through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and received a Heart Saver certificate from the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters.
The Heart Saver certificate is an award given by the Fire Headquarters to ordinary citizens and paramedics who save lives through active emergency treatment such as CPR for cardiac arrest patients.
Due to the rapid increase in confirmed cases following the Omicron outbreak, the award ceremony originally scheduled for January at the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters was not held there but delivered to the company. Lee Seung-bok, Head of the Quality Technology Department at Gwangyang Steelworks, presented the Heart Saver certificate and badge to Manager Han Hee-cheon on behalf of the Fire Headquarters and offered words of encouragement.
On November 20, Manager Han Hee-cheon was passing through downtown Gwangyang-eup when he noticed an elderly person collapsing immediately after getting out of a car. Without hesitation, he rushed over and administered emergency treatment.
First, he confirmed that the tongue was bitten between the upper and lower teeth, blocking the airway. He opened the mouth and tilted the head back to secure the airway, then performed CPR. At the same time, he informed 119 of the emergency and continued CPR according to the instructions of the person in charge until paramedics arrived at the scene.
Thanks to this prompt action, the elderly person's heart started beating again after being transported to the hospital. Manager Han Hee-cheon was able to save a precious citizen’s life based on the emergency treatment and CPR skills he had learned at work.
Han Hee-cheon, Manager at Gwangyang Steelworks, said, “I plan to share my experience during emergencies and the areas where emergency treatment was lacking so that the Heart Saver certificate will not be in vain,” adding, “I hope my case becomes a spark that protects the precious safety and lives of citizens.”
Meanwhile, the Fire Headquarters selects recipients for the certificate through a review process that requires strict conditions such as restoring the electrocardiogram before the patient arrives at the hospital, regaining consciousness before and after arrival, and surviving with full recovery for more than 72 hours after hospital arrival.
