China: "US and EU Sanctions on Russia Are Not a Fundamental Solution"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] China has clearly expressed its opposition to the United States and the European Union (EU), which have imposed economic and financial sanctions on Russia for deploying troops in Ukrainian territory.
Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized at a regular briefing on the 23rd in response to a question about the West's sanctions on Russia, saying, "Sanctions are not a fundamental and effective way to solve problems," and added, "China consistently opposes any illegal unilateral sanctions."
She then referred to the U.S. government's announcement that there have been more than 100 sanctions against Russia since 2011, questioning, "Have the U.S. sanctions solved the problem? Has the world become better?" She argued, "I hope you seriously consider whether the U.S. sanctions on Russia can resolve the Ukraine issue or guarantee Europe's security."
She stressed, "Efforts should be made to resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation." She also stated, "Some of the U.S.'s unilateral illegal sanctions have already caused serious difficulties to the economies and livelihoods of related countries," and said, "The U.S. must not undermine the legitimate rights and interests of China and other countries when handling the Ukraine and Russia issues."
