Russia 'ostracized' at UN Security Council... "Peacekeepers? Nonsense"
Jungdo "Urges Efforts for Diplomatic Resolution"
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The United Nations Security Council (hereinafter referred to as the Security Council) held an open emergency meeting on the 21st (local time) to discuss the Ukraine situation. Russia, the party involved, was reportedly condemned by most member states during the meeting.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, raised her voice at the meeting, calling Russia's dispatch of "peacekeepers" to eastern Ukraine "nonsense," saying, "We know exactly who they (the peacekeepers) really are," and reported by major foreign media that "Russian President Vladimir Putin's approval of Donbas independence is also a pretext for war."
Earlier, President Putin signed a presidential decree approving the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), controlled by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, and formalized the deployment of Russian troops to these areas under the name of peacekeepers.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said, "President Putin has torn apart the Minsk agreements (peace accords related to the Ukrainian civil war)," emphasizing, "The United States does not believe he will stop there. Russia's move will have serious consequences not only for Ukraine and Europe but for the entire world."
Martin Kimani, Kenya's Ambassador to the UN, criticized, saying, "Great powers are violating international law without much consideration," and "Multilateralism has met its death tonight."
Jiang Jun, China's Ambassador to the UN, stated, "All countries involved in the Ukraine situation should avoid any actions that could escalate tensions," and "The Chinese government welcomes and urges all efforts for a diplomatic solution."
Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, also expressed regret over "the so-called 'peacekeeping mission' order for the deployment of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine."
In response, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Ambassador to the UN, said, "Russia is diplomatically open to a diplomatic solution," but added, "However, it does not intend for new bloodshed to occur in Donbas."
The meeting was held at the request of Ukraine and was officially requested by six Security Council members: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Albania, Norway, and Ireland.

However, it seems unlikely that an official response at the Security Council level will be adopted at this meeting, as Russia, the party involved, is a permanent member with veto power and is also the chair of the council for February.
