Last year, the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency lowered the speed limits by an average of 10 km/h on a total of 221 road sections covering 727.44 km, where traffic conditions were vulnerable despite similar road conditions, resulting in speed differences.
The Northern Police Agency plans to focus the speed limit reductions on three types of road sections, considering areas with rivers or riverside roads and regions with frequent low-speed military vehicle movements: ▲ mountainous and riverside roads with many curves and steep slopes ▲ rural village roads outside urban areas with poor pedestrian conditions ▲ and intersections or crosswalks with high accident risk.
From the preliminary review and selection stage of target areas, opinions from residents and traffic expert organizations will be gathered, and collaboration and improvement procedures will be conducted with road management authorities (local governments).
In particular, to help residents adapt to the changed speed limits, signage and road surface markings will be reinforced, and if necessary, signal coordination improvements and extensions of grace periods for unmanned enforcement equipment will be implemented to minimize inconvenience to residents.
Additionally, safety facility improvements and joint enforcement and guidance activities with relevant local governments will be carried out at a total of 130 locations, including 12 past fatal accident sites and other areas with similar accident risks.
A representative of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency stated, "The reduction of speed limits outside urban areas is a policy to encourage driving at reasonable speeds for traffic safety, not an indiscriminate speed reduction," and urged residents to understand and drive safely.
