President Moon: "Welfare, Labor, and Democracy Policies Must Continue as the Next Government's Direction"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 21st, President Moon Jae-in presided over a senior secretaries meeting at the Blue House and expressed hope that the welfare, labor, and democracy policies of the Moon administration would continue as the foundation for the next government.
At the senior secretaries meeting, President Moon said, "I hope the virtuous cycle of welfare, economy, and employment will be accepted by the people as a single paradigm."
The theme of the meeting was "The Moon Jae-in Government and the Welfare State," where the achievements of the inclusive welfare state pursued by the government over the past five years were evaluated, and the remaining tasks were reviewed. In presentations and discussions, it was acknowledged that the Moon administration laid the framework for a welfare state through the highest increase in public social expenditure among previous governments, the abolition of the basic livelihood support obligation criteria, increases in basic pensions and disability pensions, and expansions of earned income tax credits and child tax credits.
President Moon stated, "Policies and debates that further promote values such as welfare, labor, and democracy need to be actively discussed during the presidential election phase and carried forward as the foundation of the next government to further develop them. The COVID-19 situation has both delayed and accelerated the implementation of welfare policies, so thoroughly review the impact COVID-19 has had on our government's welfare."
