A Tense Ukraine Crisis on the Brink of Explosion... Shared Fate with Russia
Full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine impossible... Enormous cost if full-scale war occurs
China's concern over expanding influence in Asia-Pacific through US Quad and AUKUS
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Chinese media have analyzed that a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine is impossible. They reported that if it escalates to a full-scale war, both Russia and the European Union (EU) would pay a tremendous price. They also argued that the abandonment of NATO's eastward expansion policy is the key to resolving the situation.
The state-run Global Times reported on the 21st that the United States is continuously provoking war, and that a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, and further between Russia and NATO, is impossible.
The outlet cited Chinese government-affiliated scholars, stating that Russia has no gains to achieve through a full-scale war, and that such a war would leave significant damage not only to Russia and Ukraine but to the whole of Europe.
The media noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron share the view that diplomatic solutions should be sought regarding the crisis in eastern Ukraine, dismissing the possibility of a full-scale war.
The Global Times pointed out that the United States should explain NATO's eastward expansion policy, implying that abandoning NATO's eastward expansion is the solution to the current crisis. The outlet also mentioned U.S.-led new alliances such as the Quad and AUKUS, expressing concerns about the U.S. attempting a NATO-like approach in the Asia-Pacific region to contain China. This is interpreted as a kind of shared plight, indicating that the current crisis is not limited to Russia but that China faces similar issues.
The Global Times emphasized that Russia's security concerns must be addressed, which is why China's perspective on the Ukraine issue differs from that of Western countries.
The state-run Xinhua News Agency also reported that the U.S. claim that Russia will invade Ukraine only causes distrust and division and does not help resolve the problem, urging adherence to the Minsk Agreement approved by the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
