According to market research firm Omdia on the 20th, Samsung Electronics secured the top spot in the 2021 global TV market with a 29.5% share by value and a 19.8% share by volume.
Last year's record of Samsung TVs being 'world number one' was driven by a premium strategy centered on QLED. QLED is an LCD-based TV coated with Quantum Dot (QD) technology.
Samsung Electronics launched QLED TVs in 2017 and achieved cumulative sales of approximately 26 million units in five years.
According to Omdia, Samsung QLED TVs sold 9.43 million units in 2021 alone. Starting from 800,000 units in 2017, sales steadily increased to 2.6 million in 2018, 5.32 million in 2019, and 7.79 million in 2020.
Thanks to Samsung QLED's strong performance, the overall QLED share in the premium TV market (priced above $2,500) reached 44.5% by value last year. Since 2019, QLED has maintained over 40% market share in this segment, establishing itself as the mainstream choice for premium TVs.
Additionally, Samsung Electronics led the premium TV market with a 42.1% share and the ultra-large TV market (80 inches and above) with a 44.9% share by sales last year, dominating the premium market by a wide margin.

In 2006, Samsung broke the mold of conventional TVs by launching the 'Bordeaux TV,' marking its first time as the world's number one in the market. Then in 2009, it changed the market landscape by introducing the 'LED TV,' followed by the launch of the 'Smart TV' in 2011. In 2017, Samsung led TV market innovation by unveiling the 'QLED TV' with enhanced picture quality through evolved Quantum Dot technology, and in 2018, it introduced the ‘QLED 8K’ featuring 32 million pixels.
In 2021, Samsung further strengthened its technological leadership by launching the ‘Neo QLED’ and ‘Micro LED,’ which applied Quantum Mini LED technology and upgraded picture quality, design, and sound.
Moreover, Samsung continuously proposes new products to enhance customer experience, including ▲‘The Serif,’ which blurs the boundary between furniture and TV ▲‘The Frame,’ which transforms the home into a gallery ▲‘The Sero,’ which freely rotates horizontally and vertically ▲‘The Terrace,’ an outdoor TV that delivers high-quality viewing even in outdoor environments ▲‘The Premiere,’ a 4K projector that enlarges screen size up to 130 inches to turn the home into a cinema ▲and ‘The Freestyle,’ which allows users to freely create their own screen.
