Valieva was considered a strong favorite to win at this competition but faced the risk of being barred from participation after testing positive in a doping sample. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) approved her participation, allowing her to compete on the Olympic stage, but she made repeated mistakes in the free skating and failed to win a medal. The day after the competition, Valieva packed her bags and headed back to Russia.
