[Comprehensive] Robert Pattinson as Batman: "Reality Feels More Cinematic Than Gotham City"
Movie 'The Batman' Virtual Press Conference
Actor Robert Pattinson as 9th Batman
"A Hero Who Cannot Fully Control Himself"
New Villain Riddler Appears
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Detective Batman is coming. In the original DC Comics, he is portrayed as a detective more famous than Sherlock Holmes. The director expressed confidence, saying, "'The Batman' is an emotional detective story as well as a love story."
Director Matt Reeves stated at the live conference for the movie 'The Batman' held at CGV Yongsan in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 18th, "It was difficult and intimidating to handle the vast story of a hero that has continued for over 80 years," adding, "I wanted to create a great and distinctive film."
'The Batman,' which opens on the 1st of next month, is a hero movie depicting the ruthless Batman and his confrontation with the mysterious villain Riddler who shakes him. Directed by Matt Reeves of 'Planet of the Apes,' Robert Pattinson of 'Tenet' takes on the role of the 9th Batman, signaling a generational shift.
This Batman is portrayed as a hero grounded in reality. Based on the worldviews of the 'Dark Knight' series and 'Joker,' a different Batman unfolds. He is plunged into nihilism and anger as he searches for the meaning of life after the death of his family. The 'The' in 'The Batman' signifies Bruce Wayne's contemplation of his justification and identity as a hero.
Robert Pattinson said, "Originally, Batman is a character who perfectly controls himself, but in the movie, he is portrayed as someone who does not reach perfect control. He continuously tries but does not reach perfection, and I focused on expressing that process."
The villain Riddler is a psychopathic criminal with genius intelligence who exposes the corruption of Gotham City's prominent figures, commits crimes, and leaves clues at the crime scenes for Batman to find.
Paul Dano, who plays Riddler, said, "The movie started from human psychology. Batman has trauma from his parents being murdered. The director said he wanted to explore both sides of trauma, which became the seed for emotional expansion."
The movie deals with the story of Batman in his second year. Bruce Wayne, who has been punishing criminals on the streets, acts as a detective by going into the underworld to investigate the mysterious traces left by Riddler's clues.
Director Matt Reeves said, "It was difficult to adapt such a vast story, but I wanted to make a film with personality. It was a challenging endeavor. I hoped it would be fresh while encompassing spectacular appeal and Batman's unique behavior."
He added, "The process of Batman investigating like a detective is portrayed as an emotional story," and "It is Batman's story, but also another kind of movie."
Regarding the social issues addressed in the film, such as Gotham City's vigilantes and immigrants, the director said, "I wanted to emphasize both the heroic and realistic aspects. Through this, Batman gains insight. I wanted the audience to understand and realize whether the problems he tries to solve are being amplified."
He continued, "Vigilantes exist in reality, and there was the Watergate scandal in the U.S. The corrupt city of Gotham connects to reality," he added.
Director Matt Reeves said, "I tried to depict Gotham City dramatically, but when I look at what is unfolding in the world recently, it is even more serious. We have gone through difficult times over the past few years. Reality is more dramatic than the movie, which often surprises me."
