On the 17th, Pohang City announced that it designated Heunghae as a special regeneration area under the "Special Act on the Promotion and Support of Urban Regeneration" and will promote a total of 30 unit projects.
The Heunghae area, damaged by the earthquake that occurred in 2017, has been actively implementing special regeneration projects since 2019. In 2020, five sites of completely destroyed apartment complexes were purchased to build anchor facilities, which are core facilities.
The Haengbok City Harmony Platform, to be built on the site of the former Daeseong Apartments, is a multi-complex facility including a public library, municipal daycare center, toy library, and kids caf?, and construction began in January this year.
The Buk-gu Public Health Center, responsible for public medical care and health, and the Trauma Center, which will heal psychological trauma, are scheduled to begin construction in July this year.
On the site of Gyeongrim New Hope Town, a multi-purpose disaster relief shelter that will serve as a gymnasium and disaster evacuation center will be established. The Daewoong Park Mansion Phase 2 site is nearing completion this year of a complex community center to be used as an indoor swimming pool and cultural facility.
As part of community revitalization projects, six village halls and senior centers have completed new construction, seismic reinforcement, and remodeling projects, serving as communication spaces for local residents who were isolated due to the earthquake and COVID-19.
From 2019 to 2023, Pohang City has been annually promoting community capacity-building projects such as the Special Urban Regeneration University, resident contest projects, and local venture fostering projects.
Over the past three years, 38 diverse contest projects have been selected in five areas: community recovery, spatial environment maintenance, cultural regeneration, residential environment, and regional specialized product development.
Public rental housing and apartment reconstruction projects for affected residents are also being operated without delay, and continuous consultations are underway with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and LH to ensure the rapid construction of rental housing.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang said, "The special regeneration projects, which have been promoted through communication with residents, steadily progressed last year. We will do our best to turn the earthquake crisis into an opportunity and transform the area into a better place to live."
