Recruitment of Local Governments to Participate in 'Smart Innovation District Creation' in SME-Dense Areas
'Public-Private Partnership Small and Medium Venture Smart Innovation District Development Project' Call for Proposals
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Kwon Chil-seung, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry) announced on the 15th that it will hold a public contest to select two sites for the '2023 Public-Private Cooperation SME Smart Innovation District Project' (hereinafter referred to as Smart Innovation District).
The Smart Innovation District project supports the creation of shared-use platforms necessary for local companies, such as manufacturing innovation smart platforms, smart artificial intelligence (AI) logistics, shared corporate spaces, and eco-friendly shared infrastructure, based on private company investment in areas densely populated with SMEs. The applicants for the project are metropolitan governments, and if the application area is at the basic local government level, joint participation by metropolitan and basic local governments as co-hosting institutions is also possible.
Starting this year, the Ministry plans to select preliminary consulting target areas in the first phase for rapid and effective project implementation, then conduct a second evaluation on areas that have concretized detailed project plans through preliminary consulting to select the final project sites. Two final sites will be selected, and it is expected that the selected areas will complete preliminary administrative procedures such as shared property review early this year and be able to promptly proceed with the project starting in 2023.

The Ministry plans to support 2 billion KRW per site per year for two years, totaling 4 billion KRW, with local governments matching national funds with local funds to establish shared-use smart platforms. The final selected Smart Innovation District sites will be announced in August after evaluation by a committee composed of SME-related experts, urban planning and location experts.
