10 Honorable Mention Works Selected for Contributing to Solving Urban Life Issues and Expanding Design Value
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and hosted and organized by the Seoul Design Foundation, the international design award 'Human City Design Award' has selected 10 works for the Honorable Mention (Excellence Award), including the design 'Accessible Beaches' that helps disabled people in wheelchairs and the elderly easily use the beach, and the project 'Cine Passeio' that revitalized the old town by remodeling a military building to revive memories of an old movie theater.
On the 14th, the Seoul Design Foundation announced that among the 10 Honorable Mention works, the Citizen Award will be chosen by the hands of the citizens. Citizen voting will be held both online and offline from the 15th until next month 6th. Voting can be done online on the official 'Human City Design Award' website or offline at the D-Sup on the first floor of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Sallimteo.
Now in its third year, the 'Human City Design Award' is an international design award given to individuals or groups who have contributed to sustainable urban development by achieving a harmonious relationship between people and society, and people and the environment.
This year, the competition categories were greatly expanded from the existing urban, space, and environment fields to all design fields including product, visual, digital·multimedia, space·system, experience·service·social design, attracting great interest and response with 100 projects submitted from 22 countries despite the COVID-19 situation.
The judging was conducted by authorities in creative city innovation such as Charles Landry and Lu Xiaobo, Dean of the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University, adding professionalism and fairness. Through live presentations, discussions, and online video conferences, 10 works that solved urban life problems, expanded the value of design globally, or presented future visions were selected as Honorable Mentions.
Among the 10 Honorable Mention works, the Citizen Award will be chosen by citizens, while the Grand Prize and Safety & Security Award will be selected through expert judging. The Citizen Award and Safety & Security Award are special awards newly established this year.
The 'Human City Design Award' ceremony is scheduled to be held online on the DDP opening anniversary, next month 21st. On that day, all award-winning works including the Grand Prize, Safety & Security Award, and Citizen Award will be announced and awarded. The Grand Prize winner will receive a prize of 50 million KRW and a trophy, while the Honorable Mention (Excellence Award) and special awards (Citizen Award, Safety & Security Award) will receive 5 million KRW and a plaque.
Lee Soon-jong, Chairperson of the Human City Design Award Steering Committee, said, “Even amid the COVID-19 situation, designers around the world have not given up on the dream of better, happier, and healthier cities and are moving forward toward the future,” adding, “The value of the Human City Design Award is completed when the efforts and positive influence shown in their designs are spread.”
