Homeless Man Chases Woman to Her Home... Korean-American Woman Murdered in Manhattan Chinatown, USA
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] A Korean-American woman in her 30s was murdered on the 13th (local time) in Manhattan's Chinatown, New York City, New York State, USA. CCTV footage clearly captured a man in his 20s, a homeless person, following the woman as she got out of a taxi and entered an apartment.
According to The New York Times (NYT) and others, the Korean-American woman, Lee (35), was found dead at her home in Manhattan's Lower East Side on the same day. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the NYT reported that the suspect, Asamad Nash (25), attempted to flee when the police arrived after receiving a report.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to a neighbor's report of screams around 4:20 a.m. at an apartment on Christie Street in the Lower East Side. After a standoff on the 6th floor of the apartment building, the suspect was arrested 1 hour and 15 minutes after the crime. A police official stated, "The victim was found dead in the bathroom of her home. She was stabbed multiple times and appeared to have fiercely resisted until just before her death."
The New York Post obtained CCTV footage from the apartment showing the suspect following the victim into the building. The building owner who provided the footage explained, "The suspect followed the victim as she got out of the taxi and entered the apartment. He kept a distance while chasing her, then closed the gap starting from the hallway, closely following her. He grabbed the door just before the victim's front door closed."
The victim worked as a senior creative producer at a digital music online platform and had only moved from New Jersey a year ago. It is reported that she did not know the suspect and had no prior contact with him.
According to the police, the suspect is a homeless person with multiple prior convictions and was involved in other incidents such as assaults near the building.
The police are investigating whether this case is a hate crime. Shortly after the incident, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated, "The NYPD is investigating this case, and we stand with the Asian community today," adding, "Our mission is clear. We will never allow such violence to continue."
