According to the legal community on the 12th, on the 27th of last month, Judge Jung Wan of Criminal Division 11 at the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced A (33, male), who was charged with special threats against a family member and obstruction of official duties, to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation period.
The court explained the reason for the sentence, stating, "At the time of the crime, there were unfavorable factors such as threatening his mother with a dangerous object without any special reason and assaulting the face of the victim police officer," but added, "The mother and the victim police officer do not wish for the defendant to be punished and hope that his mental illness will be treated."
On November 15 of last year, A, who has a mental illness, struck the floor with a heavy object, and his mother, B, tried to stop him. In response, A became enraged and threatened B by attempting to throw the object he was holding at her. Additionally, he punched a police officer who arrived after a report was made, striking the officer's face once.
