US Deploys Additional Military Troops to Bordering Romania in Preparation for 'Ukraine Crisis'
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The United States has deployed additional troops to Romania, a neighboring country, in preparation for Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
According to Romania's state-run Agerpres news agency on the 10th (local time), the advance party of the additional U.S. troops entered Romania through the Hungarian border last night.
The agency reported that they belong to the 191st Infantry Battalion of the U.S. military, which was stationed in Germany before being redeployed to Romania. Battalion Commander Sorin Semeniuc said, "They will head to the Mihail Kog?lniceanu base in eastern Romania."
About 900 U.S. troops are already stationed at the Kog?lniceanu base, and approximately 1,000 troops currently stationed in Germany are scheduled to be additionally deployed within a few days. Earlier, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that 1,000 U.S. troops would be redeployed from Germany to Romania last week.
Russia, which forcibly annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014, has deployed about 130,000 troops along the Ukrainian border since the end of last year.
The West is strengthening military support for Ukraine, anticipating that Russia may launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine soon.
Romania, a former communist country, shares a border of about 600 km with Ukraine and joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2004.
