Xi Jinping: "We Must Board the 'Noah's Ark' of the New Era"
Series of Summit Meetings Held for Beijing Olympics
Chinese President Xi Jinping is meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres, who visited the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the 5th to attend the Olympic opening ceremony.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is showcasing his global leadership by holding a series of meetings with heads of state or high-level officials from various countries attending the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on the 6th, President Xi met with United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres the previous day at the Great Hall of the People. At the meeting, Xi stated, "Humanity lives on one global village, and our destinies are closely interconnected," adding, "In responding to various urgent global challenges, we must strengthen unity and cooperation and board the 'Noah's Ark' of the new era together for a more beautiful future for mankind."
It is unusual that Xi, who has strengthened the Communist Party's control over religion, referred to Noah's Ark from the Old Testament. Xi also emphasized China's commitment to contributing to the building of a 'community with a shared future for mankind.'
Xi further stated that China has fulfilled its promise to supply 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the international community last year and pledged to continue enhancing vaccine support for developing countries.
He mentioned three major issues that humanity should focus on: epidemic prevention cooperation, development promotion, and the elevation of democracy (民主), then said, "There is no single absolute institutional model in the world," and "Each country has the right to choose a path that suits its national conditions and the needs of its people."
On the 5th, Xi met with heads of state from Central Asian countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. In successive bilateral summits with Egypt, Serbia, Ecuador, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Xi highlighted vaccine diplomacy and Belt and Road cooperation, emphasizing his agenda. Prior to this, on the opening day of the Olympics, the 4th, Xi held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, due to some Western countries, including the United States, declaring a diplomatic boycott (not sending high-ranking government officials to the Olympics) citing China's human rights issues, only about 20 countries sent heads of state or high-level officials to this event.
