According to local political circles on the 6th, following his schedule in Jeju the previous day, Yoon visited Gwangju, a stronghold of the ruling party, to carry out his schedule.
Although the Honam region is an absolute weak area for the People Power Party, recent polls show Yoon’s support rate rising to a significant level, prompting him to put in effort. Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the People Power Party, also spent time in Gwangju, including climbing Mudeungsan on the 1st.
On this day, Yoon began his schedule by paying respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery. Previously, on November 10th last year, Yoon attempted to visit the May 18th Democratic Cemetery but was blocked by citizens angered by his ‘remarks defending Jeon Du-hwan’ and ended up paying respects at the square instead of reaching the memorial tower.
At the May 18th Democratic Cemetery this day, Yoon plans to face the painful history of Gwangju, reflect on it, and declare ‘Yoon Seok-yeol with Gwangju’ to move toward a better tomorrow for Gwangju.
He will also reaffirm that ‘the democratic spirit of Gwangju is the spirit of all of the Republic of Korea’ and express respect and remembrance for the spirits of the May 18th Democratic Movement.
In the afternoon, he will visit the site of the newly built apartment collapse accident in Gwangju to meet with bereaved families and victims’ relatives and hold a session to review the cause investigation and institutional improvement measures to prevent recurrence of the accident.
