He mentioned the suffering of local residents due to conflicts during the construction of the naval base and said, "I engrave former President Roh Moo-hyun's anguish and determination in my heart," becoming momentarily choked up and unable to continue speaking for a while.
On that afternoon, during his visit to Gangjeong Haeoreum Sunset Road in Gangjeong Village, Jeju City, Candidate Yoon said, "Looking out at the vast sea here, my heart is full, but at the same time, I feel a heavy sense of responsibility," adding, "In 2007, despite much opposition around him, former President Roh Moo-hyun made a painful decision."
He continued, "I engrave former President Roh Moo-hyun's anguish and determination in my heart," emphasizing, "We, including myself and all our people, must transform this place from a symbol of political strife into one of unity and peace."
He also stated, "Local residents have suffered for over a decade due to conflicts during the naval base construction," and expressed, "I offer my sincere condolences to those people."
In particular, Candidate Yoon stressed, "We must not forget that the peace and security of the Republic of Korea must be supported by a strong self-reliant defense capability." He reaffirmed his diplomatic and security strategy based on the 'self-strengthening' he has emphasized so far.
At this event, Candidate Yoon pledged to make Gangjeong Village a global tourism hub, saying, "We will spare no support at the central government level so that it can become a core project of the Jeju marine tourism cluster," and added, "While ensuring that the military's mission is not hindered, we will do our best to transform it into the world's best 'civil-military complex tourism port.'"
