“Special Communication Situation Room Operation” SK Telecom Manages Mobile Network Quality Ahead of Lunar New Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] SK Telecom announced on the 24th that it will intensively manage mobile communication quality to provide stable service even during the Lunar New Year holiday.
SK Telecom will operate a special communication situation room from the 28th of this month to February 2nd, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, and deploy about 1,500 SK Telecom and ICT family company specialists nationwide to monitor communication services 24 hours a day.
They have expanded the capacity of 5G and LTE base stations mainly in train stations, bus terminals, major tourist attractions, accommodations, and downtown areas where an increase in mobile communication traffic is expected nationwide. Considering the possibility of increased private vehicle movement due to social distancing measures, inspections of communication infrastructure have also been completed on major sections of highways and national roads, as well as family travel destinations such as resorts and recreational forests.
In particular, they plan to thoroughly manage mobile communication quality in habitual congestion sections on highways where localized data traffic increases are expected, and the TMAP service, which customers frequently use on their way home and back.
Additionally, to support family gatherings using mobile phones such as untact Sebae (New Year's bowing), they will provide free video call services to their customers from the 29th to February 2nd. Based on usage patterns during last year’s Lunar New Year holiday free video call support, they expect the number of video call users this year to increase about fivefold compared to normal times.
SK Telecom forecasts that non-face-to-face memorial services or family gatherings using video call and untact solutions such as Midas and Ifland will become more active, and that data usage related to video streaming services like Wavve and YouTube will increase by about 23% compared to normal days on the day of the Lunar New Year.
