'Gwangju Apartment Collapse' Evacuation Order Lifted After 12 Days
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The evacuation order for nearby residents was lifted 12 days after the collapse of a newly constructed apartment in Hwajeong-dong, Gwangju, being built by Hyundai Development Company, due to safety reasons.
The Seo-gu District Office of Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 22nd at 6 p.m. that part of the evacuation order would be lifted. Seo-gu judged that there was no longer a risk of additional collapse as some parts of the tower crane were dismantled.
As a result, about 100 households across 34 lots, including 23-5 Hwajeong-dong, were able to return home. However, the Kumho Highville commercial building at 23-15 Hwajeong-dong was excluded from the evacuation order lift as search and rescue operations using heavy equipment still need to be conducted.
Seo-gu plans to have Hyundai Development Company cover not only the direct damages caused by the accident but also accommodation and living expenses due to the evacuation order.
