Differentiated Preparation... Globalization of Variety Shows
'Solo Hell' Ranks 8th in Netflix Weekly Non-English TV Series Chart
PDs Kim Jaewon and Kim Nahyun Exclude PPL and Minimize Subtitles... Focus on Emotional Flow to Heighten Tension
The dating reality show 'Solo Hell' achieved global success. It became the first domestic entertainment program to enter the top 10 (8th place, 17.15 million hours) in the non-English TV series category on Netflix's weekly chart (December 27 - January 2). This is an accomplishment that neither Yoo Jae-suk's 'Busted!' nor PD Kim Tae-ho's 'Mukbo and Teolbo' managed to achieve. Dating is a universal interest. While the low entry barrier favors success, competition is fierce. On Netflix alone, there are shows like 'I Am Solo', 'Heart Signal', and 'Dolsingles'.
'Solo Hell' does not seem to differ much in structure or progress. Twelve participants in their 20s and 30s spend 8 nights and 9 days on a remote island called 'Hell Island' (Saseungbongdo), seeking compatible partners. Winners of the games get to spend one night (worth 10 to 20 million KRW) with their chosen partner in a luxury hotel resort suite. Within this familiar setup, participants such as Song Ji-a, Moon Se-hoon, Shin Ji-yeon, and Oh Jin-taek form dramatic relationships as if scripted. Each nurtures affection, creating tension comparable to movies and dramas.
JTBC producers Kim Jae-won and Kim Na-hyun stated, "The story was created by the participants themselves without production intervention." They added, "We were also surprised that Shin Ji-yeon, who thought she would receive much attention from many men, did not get a single vote in the first liking poll." There was a kind of guide. Before filming, the cast was instructed to openly express their honest feelings and words. The two PDs said, "Each one was able to express themselves honestly and performed well," and "It seems they reached viewers with sufficient charm."
Kim Jae-won and Kim Na-hyun personally cast the participants. They selected them based on strict criteria requiring thorough self-management and high self-esteem. They also considered the participants' preferences. They asked about ideal types and searched for suitable partners as if arranging blind dates. The two PDs explained, "Casting participants who joined midway was the most challenging," adding, "They had to have different charms from the existing cast and strong adaptability." They continued, "There was little time to develop couples, so we are grateful and sorry that they enriched the story."
Recently, some participants in dating reality programs suffer from excessive slander or rumors. 'Solo Hell' is no exception. One participant recently had their social media account hacked. The two PDs said, "Based on Netflix's diverse reality show experience, we have established a systematic system, so we are not overly worried." They added, "Although we cannot disclose specifics due to regulations, we conducted consultations with psychiatrists before filming to check if participants could endure stress or aftereffects post-broadcast."

'Solo Hell' excluded product placement according to Netflix regulations. It focused solely on capturing the emotional flow of the participants, increasing the story's pace while maximizing tension. Kim Jae-won and Kim Na-hyun said, "Except for cases where the audio was unclear, we hardly used subtitles," and "The participants' emotions appeared on screen just as they were, seemingly capturing the attention of global viewers." They added, "We are pleased that a variety of reactions have poured in from overseas as the viewers' range of judgment has broadened."
