National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute Publishes Two Investigation Reports on Rural Exploitation in Jeonbuk during Japanese Colonial Period
The Cultural Heritage Administration's National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute has published two academic series containing the results of investigations into rural exploitation in the Jeonbuk region during the Japanese colonial period: "Memories of Rural Exploitation in the Japanese Colonial Period, Hwaho-ri II" and "Traces of Rural Exploitation in Jeollabuk-do during the Japanese Colonial Period."
"Memories of Rural Exploitation in the Japanese Colonial Period, Hwaho-ri II" includes research on Ungbon Farm (熊本農場) in Hwaho-ri, Jeongeup City, where the history of rural exploitation during the Japanese colonial period and rural health after liberation remains, as well as large-scale landholdings exceeding 1000 jeongbo (9.917 million square meters) operated at the time in Gunsan, Iksan, Gimje, Jeonju, and other areas by ▲ Fuji Kogyo Co., Ltd. (不二興業株式會社), Damok Farm (多木農場), Sekcheonhyun Agricultural Co., Ltd. (石川縣農業株式會社), ▲ Saecheon Farm (細川農場), ▲ Iyeopsa Farm (二葉社農場), and ▲ Dongsan Agricultural Co., Ltd. (東山農事株式會社) Jeonbuk branch office.
The book is composed of three parts. ▲ Part 1 contains the history, figures, literature, and distribution of architectural structures in Hwaho-ri village, Jeongeup. ▲ Part 2 describes the history, literature, architectural structures, and land changes of six Japanese landlord farms including Fuji Kogyo Co., Ltd. and Damok Farm. ▲ Part 3 includes essays and archival photographs related to buildings associated with rural exploitation in the Jeonbuk region during the Japanese colonial period.
"Traces of Rural Exploitation in Jeollabuk-do during the Japanese Colonial Period" is part of the first project under the joint cooperation agreement signed in July between the National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute and Jeonju City for "Academic Survey Research and Utilization of Cultural Heritage in the Jeonju Area." This book, jointly published by the institute and Jeonju History Museum, contains archival photographs from the Japanese colonial period held by Jeonju History Museum, as well as books, blueprints, cadastral maps, and documents related to Japanese farms.
Regarding the history of Japanese landlord farms established in the Jeonbuk region during the Japanese colonial period and the exploitation involved, ▲ Part 1 includes archival photographs of Jeonju city streets, government offices that supported economic exploitation, and farm offices during the Japanese colonial period. ▲ Part 2 details the history of Japanese-owned farms in Jeollabuk-do during the Japanese colonial period. ▲ Parts 3 and 4 contain books, farm building blueprints, cadastral and land maps, documents, and bridge blueprints related to Japanese landlord farms that were at the forefront of rural exploitation during the Japanese colonial period.
