Democratic Party Gwangju Election Committee Launches 'Trash-Free Election' Initiative
‘Je·Dae·Ro’ Election Office Opens
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party’s Gi-eon-chi Election Countermeasures Committee launched an eco-friendly campaign office as promised at its inception, signaling the start of a “zero waste election” in response to the climate crisis.
On the 4th, the Gwangju campaign committee announced that it held the opening ceremony of the “Je·Dae·Ro” campaign office near the Gwangju Party Office in Chipyeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju.
At the opening ceremony, the co-chairs of the Gwangju campaign committee declared three major missions and nine practical tasks, personally introducing the campaign office filled with eco-friendly messages.
First, the office name “Je·Dae·Ro” was derived from the first letters of the three major missions based on candidate Lee Jae-myung’s new slogan “Jedaero” (meaning “properly”): “Zero Waste,” “Alternative Eco-friendly Materials,” and “Low Carbon.”
The nine practical tasks supporting the three missions include ▲using mugs ▲holding meetings with digital documents ▲unplugging unused electronic devices ▲wearing thermal underwear ▲using personal tableware ▲using handkerchiefs instead of tissue paper ▲using eco-friendly solid detergent ▲using stairs instead of elevators ▲walking for short distances, all of which are operational guidelines for an environmentally conscious campaign office.
The interior facilities of the campaign office were also prepared with eco-friendly and recycled materials in line with the three missions, and exhibits were installed to remember animals and plants disappearing due to the climate crisis, such as African penguins and coral reefs.
For example, the campaign office flooring was decorated with artificial turf made from discarded carpets, and in the meeting and workrooms, electronic documents are used on tablet PCs or smartphones instead of paper documents.
In the energy charging room, electronic devices such as smartphones are charged using electricity generated by a small solar power generator.
To reduce the use of disposable items such as straws and tissues, eco-friendly reusable products like bamboo straws and handkerchiefs are provided to minimize disposable product usage.
In the self-charging room, a camping site prepared for citizens, visitors can relax, freely exchange opinions with the campaign co-chairs, and experience self-charging bicycles.
On the campaign office walls, encouraging messages from citizens wishing well for the Gwangju Gi-eon-chi Election Countermeasures Committee were displayed, and a life-size cutout of candidate Lee Jae-myung was set up to enhance the election atmosphere.
