People Power Party "Using painful memories to criticize the opposition is ruthless"
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, advised his party’s presidential candidate Yoon Seok-youl that "if you stay still, you will win (the presidential election)," sparking controversy. Former Minister of Justice Chu Mi-ae warned, "If you stay still, both the candidate and the People Power Party will sink," referencing the Sewol ferry captain who shares the same name as Lee.
On the 3rd, former Minister Chu posted on her Facebook titled "Will the Naked Emperor Strategy Work?" She began, "Captain Lee Jun-seok of the Sewol ferry told the children who were desperately waiting for rescue to stay still. He deceived the children into thinking that rescue would soon come if they stayed still and prevented evacuation actions. Then he escaped alone and survived."
She continued, "Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, told candidate Yoon that if he stays still, he will win the presidential election. It feels like d?j? vu. If you stay still, both the candidate and the People Power Party will sink," adding, "Kim Jong-in, the general election committee chairman, also said he would manage messages and speeches instead of direct remarks from the candidate. It’s a naked emperor strategy, telling the candidate to put up a 'transparent curtain' so he only looks good."
She added, "Even if they dress up the candidate to look perfect when the public already sees his abilities as bottomed out, no one except the candidate himself will be fooled."
In response, Kim Yong-tae, Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, criticized, "This is truly malicious. Before being a politician, please be a decent human being." On the 3rd, Kim posted on his Facebook, "I understand former leader Chu’s desire to criticize the People Power Party, but how can she compare the People Power Party to the Sewol ferry and Leader Lee Jun-seok to Captain Lee Jun-seok of the Sewol ferry?"
He continued, "Using a nationwide painful memory to criticize the opposition party, former leader Chu is truly malicious," and added, "How could she have served as Minister of Justice, who is supposed to uphold the country’s justice?"
He also raised his voice, saying, "Have you ever thought about the wounds the Sewol ferry victims’ families would feel after hearing former leader Chu’s remarks? Considering the families who sought even the remains because they didn’t know if their loved ones were alive or dead, it’s shameful to the point that I can’t even raise my head."
