US Telecom and Airlines Conflict... Government Says "No Interference Issue with Domestic 5G Radio Altimeters"
Ministry of Science and ICT: "Domestic 5G Frequencies Separated by More Than 500 MHz from Radar Altimeters"
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Regarding the interference issue between C-band 5G mobile communication services and radio altimeters occurring in the United States, the Ministry of Science and ICT proactively clarified that "domestic 5G frequencies are separated from radio altimeters by more than 500 MHz."
On the 3rd, the Ministry of Science and ICT issued a press clarification stating, "The United States has allocated the 3.7?3.98 GHz band for 5G, raising concerns about interference with adjacent radio altimeter frequencies (4.2?4.4 GHz band)."
It added, "South Korea's 5G mobile communication frequencies are in the 3.42?3.7 GHz band, which is significantly separated by more than 500 MHz from the radio altimeter frequencies of 4.2?4.4 GHz, and since the commercialization of 5G in April 2019, there have been no reports of interference with radio altimeters." In fact, 5G mobile communication base stations are operating near airports such as Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport, but no issues have been reported.
Previously, a legal battle was anticipated between the telecommunications and aviation industries in the United States. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that AT&T and Verizon officially rejected the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)'s request on the 2nd (local time) to delay the commercialization of 5G mid-band services near airports. The aviation industry claims that using the C-band 5G mid-band service near airports could cause errors in aviation communications, while telecom companies deny this, stating it is not true. They also cited the fact that more than ten countries, including France, allow this service near airports as evidence.
