SK Telecom Secures Legal Status as an 'Electronic Signature Certification Service Provider'
Recognized by Ministry of Science and ICT and KISA
Replacing Official Certificates with PASS Certification
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] SK Telecom announced on the 31st that it has been officially recognized as an electronic signature certification operator by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).
The electronic signature certification operator status is a mandatory legal position for promoting domestic certification projects. It was introduced to ensure the reliability and security of electronic signature certification methods offered by companies and institutions following the abolition of the public certificate system in December last year.
With this recognition as an electronic signature certification operator, SK Telecom can largely replace the authentication functions of the abolished public certificate through the PASS certificate. While maintaining its status as a pilot operator for certification projects by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which provides authentication methods on major government sites such as the National Tax Service, Government24, and the National Secretary, SK Telecom will also be able to offer simple authentication services across various financial services.
In addition to replacing the functions of the existing public certificate, SK Telecom plans to expand the application scope by providing the PASS certificate as a key authentication method for the upcoming MyData business.
The PASS certificate boasts ease of use and strong security through the combination of communication information. Currently, a total of 32 million PASS certificates have been issued by the three major telecom operators combined, and they are used as authentication methods on government sites and partner companies such as Hyundai Card, Mirae Asset Daewoo, and Kyobo Life Insurance.
