Daily Workers Must Join National Pension Workplace Plan If Monthly Income Exceeds 2.2 Million Won
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] The National Pension Service (Chairman Kim Yong-jin) announced on the 30th that starting January 1 next year, daily and part-time workers with a monthly income of 2.2 million won or more will be enrolled as workplace subscribers to the National Pension regardless of the number of working days or hours.
Until now, daily and part-time workers were only eligible as workplace subscribers if they worked for more than one month and worked at least 8 days or 60 hours per month. However, from next year, a 'income criterion' will be added, allowing workers with a monthly income of 2.2 million won or more to become workplace subscribers even if their working days or hours are insufficient.
Under the current criteria, even if a worker has worked for more than one month and earns 2.2 million won or more per month, if they only worked 6 days in a month, they could not be enrolled as a workplace subscriber. From next year, they will be included as workplace subscribers, and employers will bear half of the insurance premium, reducing the worker's insurance burden.
This system improvement aims to protect the rights of daily workers who have a certain level of income but are excluded from workplace subscription due to insufficient working days or hours. The related law was amended in June this year.
The Service expects that about 93,000 daily and part-time workers annually will benefit from workplace subscription by lowering the threshold for National Pension enrollment through this income-based improvement in workplace subscription criteria.
