Local Currency 1 Million Won and Wedding Expense Support... Sangju City, Gyeongbuk, Takes Steps to Reduce Marriage Burden for Youth
Expectations to Overcome Low Birthrate through Stable Marriages such as Small Weddings
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Trainee Reporter Lee Seryeong] Sangju City, Gyeongbuk Province, is implementing various population increase policies from the new year to overcome the continuous population decline and low birthrate trend.
According to the full revision of the Sangju City Population Increase Policy Support Ordinance, the city expanded the eligibility for moving-in support funds and prepared support measures for married couples starting in 2022.
These measures aim to reduce the financial burden of marriage for young people and help them establish families.
Newlyweds who registered their marriage after January 1, 2022, and have resided in Sangju City for at least one year prior to the marriage registration date, and both spouses currently have their address registered in the city at the time of application, will receive marriage encouragement funds.
For couples aged 49 or younger, after reviewing eligibility requirements, Sangju currency worth 1 million KRW per couple will be provided, and applications can be submitted to the local eup, myeon, or dong administrative welfare centers within one year from the marriage registration date.
To encourage marriage, the city will utilize local tourist attractions to hold "small weddings" and support up to six couples planning small-scale weddings with ceremony costs of up to 5 million KRW.
