Ruling and Opposition Parties Fail to Agree on Special Prosecutor and Extraordinary Session with Floor Leaders... "Negotiations to Continue Tomorrow"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The floor leaders of the ruling and opposition parties discussed current issues, including the special prosecution law related to the Daejang-dong scandal, on the 27th but failed to reach a consensus. They agreed to meet again tomorrow to continue negotiations.
The floor leaders met at the National Assembly to discuss the special prosecution and the schedule for the extraordinary session.
After the meeting, Yoon Ho-jung, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated, "During this extraordinary session, it is necessary to support small business owners through institutional support measures to strengthen social distancing and other COVID-19 countermeasures." He added, "I mentioned that we need to pass the three COVID-19-related laws for small business support and legislation that enables advance support."
He also said, "I proposed handling laws related to the labor director system in public institutions, the introduction of time-off systems for public officials and teachers, and laws to protect transportation-vulnerable groups, which were announced by the presidential candidates of both parties."
They agreed to continue discussions tomorrow.
Regarding the Daejang-dong development scandal, the special prosecution was also discussed but the parties remained at an impasse. The ruling party supports conducting the special prosecution through the standing special prosecutor system already in place, while the opposition insists on discussing a separate special prosecution law. Kim Ki-hyun, floor leader of the People Power Party, said, "(The ruling party) proposed the standing special prosecutor plan and expressed the position that the Judiciary Committee should clarify the circumstances regarding illegal surveillance related to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials." He added, "Since no agreement has been reached, further discussions are ongoing."
